A Stroll in Dazaifu

Over the weekend, I visited Dazaifu in Fukuoka for a stroll for the first time in a long while, and tried “Umegae Mochi” for the first time.

I originally thought Umegae Mochi would be stuffed with plums and have a sour taste, but after trying it, I realized that wasn’t the case at all! It’s simply called that because there’s a plum blossom pattern stamped on the cake.

The outside is delightfully crispy with the chewy texture of mochi, filled with sweet red bean paste—a bit like a mochi version of taiyaki. Highly recommended for anyone visiting Fukuoka soon!

If you visit Dazaifu, be sure to stop by Rankan for a break. Their egg sandwich is delicious, and the coffee is a classic dark roast brewed with flannel cloth filters (though I couldn’t really tell the difference).
