This book was read during my college years, and I only have some notes and rough memories left. Here, I will summarize them:
The book discusses the reasons and methods for human success.
- Environment, cultural influences, and background are all important. These factors should be taken into consideration behind a person's success.
- The 10,000-hour rule is crucial: deliberate practice. It's not just about practicing, but consciously practicing. Improve oneself with each practice session.
- Success is not solely dependent on individual effort.
I think nowadays, people are gradually realizing that success is not solely based on individual effort, which is great. However, it should not be used as an excuse to give up on hard work. So, I often think, "Oh, you mentioned these things, so what?"
The biggest takeaway here is the 10,000-hour rule and deliberate practice. The innate conditions that we cannot change are the rest.
Excerpts from the book
-
Practice isn't the thing you do once you're good. It's the thing you do that makes you good.
-
Success is not a random act. It arises out of a predictable and powerful set of circumstances and opportunities.
-
No one who can rise before dawn three hundred sixty days a year fails to make his family rich.
